I left the Catholic Church for a lot of reasons, but the anti-gay rhetoric was in the top 5. Even in my old parish, where the priest and congregation were “quietly accepting”, I knew every dime I put in the collection was headed to diocesan projects, here and in Africa, which put LGBTQ people at risk.

When people start throwing the Bible at me, I ask them to quote Jesus, if they’re such good Christians. Find me a quote where Jesus condemned gays, and you’ll have my attention.

Of course, there aren’t any. Go figure.

The Church is doing exactly what it was designed to do — enforce the power structure. That includes racism, homophobia and misogyny. You’ll find no justice here, James. Only exceptionalism, cruelty and violence.
