Thank you for writing this and for sharing this history that is so often erased. I always have mixed feelings about military holidays. My dad, brothers, ex-husband all served, and I am grateful for and proud of their service. But my great uncles fought in segregated units in WWII, and came home to a country where they still, as black men, couldn’t vote. I see undocumented immigrants being deported right now, even after serving in combat zones, protecting the very country that rejects them. We have so much more work to do.
