What a powerful story ... brings back vivid memories of those summer train trips of my childhood in the 60's, all of us cousins riding from Chicago to visit family in Mississippi ... and how the Black railroad men would tend to us, watch out for us. Soft whispers reminding us to move to the colored car before we crossed the Big Muddy out of Illinois and into Jim Crow country. My dark-skinned cousins in Newton, sending me into places they couldn't go for gum and ice cream and pickles, and laughing hysterically at our "trick". I am feeling my own history as well as yours. :-) Thank you.
