While I appreciate the shout out to my story, your use of the phrase “respect the police” is wildly inaccurate. I have taught my children — as so many Black mothers have been forced to do — that they cannot trust the police, that they have to assume their lives are in danger in the presence of the police. That’s not respect. That’s realism, fear, and fury. I have no respect for racism or its perpetrators.
